Natalie Cole, the award winning vocalist died recently (reportedly from congestive heart failure) at the age of 65. She was the daughter of legendary Nat King Cole, who had an outstanding vocal career in his own right before he passed away. One of her biggest hits was a duet she actually sang with her father (done through modern day technology) simply entitled “Unforgettable.” In the video, she actually sings along with her deceased father in a beautiful presentation. You can Google her name and find out about her great songs. Early in her career she did have drug issues which she eventually overcame. On a personal note, I actually played for her years ago for an event called the Radio One 25th anniversary in Washington, DC. There were “many” big name stars in attendance, including P Diddy, Jay-Z, Aretha Franklin and more. The one thing I can tell you is that even though this function was attended by such awesome beauties like Ciara, Janet Jackson and Beyonce, in “my opinion” the “prettiest woman there” that night was “Natalie Cole.” To see her in person was staggering, because while the others wore tons of makeup Natalie had a “natural look” that just seemed flawless to me. Her eyes were especially incredible to witness in person. We did a couple of tunes with her, but the one that was most noteworthy to me was her classic “Inseparable.” I was trying so hard to find pictures of us performing with her for this event but could not find it. We even did a television segment for TV1 that I also could not find, and I apologize for that. She was a really nice woman, and it was my pleasure to perform with her. Maybe one day her life can be chronicled in a movie just like others. She had her problems early in her career, but as with any life, it’s not how you start, but rather how you finish that counts.
