“That’s the way of the world
Plant your flower and you grow a pearl
Child is born with a heart of gold
Way of the world makes his heart so cold”
These are lyrics from a song by Earth, Wind and Fire. The song is entitled “That’s the way of the world.” For me it came to mind the other day when I took a walk in my neighborhood and saw a hawk swoop down on a little bird, grasp it in it”s claws and take it up to another tree where it ate the bird. Feathers were flying all over as the hawk devoured the bird to satisfy it’s hunger. I wasn’t sure how I should feel about that. The little bird probably didn’t deserve to have his life ended in such a fashion, but on the other hand the hawk needed to eat in order to survive. Just 2 weeks prior to that I witnessed a hawk swoop down on a squirrel and kill it for consuming. Should the hawk be hated for what it is “naturally supposed” to do? Birds wait for rain so that the earthworms can come out of the ground and then the birds eat them as well. I realized that we all are products of the world we live in. Some things are natural. Other things are created. In fact, I find it highly complexing that we go to war in order for us to experience peace. We kill each other so that we can live. “That’s the way of the world.” We create things like Facebook and Instagram to tell our stories, but then get upset based on what we “feel” we see (or don’t see). Some people believe in Facebook and Instagram so much that it becomes their reality. They base their lives according to what they find there. Is that fair? People are born with disabilities, and while that may seem unfair it is still part of the formula of life. While you may feel depressed there is probably someone somewhere who would gladly trade places with you. “That’s the way of the world.” We judge people by race, gender and custom. These people are just as human as the rest of us, but yet we form prejudices and stereotypes based on what we feel we know about them. “That’s the way of the world.” In most instances, the clothes we wear and the foods we eat resulted from the death of creatures. How good does that make you feel? The way of the world is so much more than just a song. It is a way of life. We claim dominance over other life forms on this planet because we claim to have superior intellect. Yet if you accidentally fell into a pool of hungry sharks that intellect may not save you. There are people who will take advantage of you and just like the hawk they will swoop down on you and devour you. “That’s the way of the world.” You can try to protect yourself from it, but you need to remember that you are a part of it. Thank you for checking out my Daily Thought, and as always I wish you the very best that life has to offer.
