Brett Jolly’s Daily Thought (“Bruno Mars and talk of culture appropriation”)

I was disheartened to hear talk about Bruno Mars not being true to his own culture due to the ingredients of his music. I have nothing but love for what he is doing, and I consider him to be the only “true” musical leader left in a sagging entertainment field. When I heard people talk about his ethnicity and how he only borrows from other Black entertainers I was shocked. The Beatles openly admitted they benefitted from the styles of other artists such as Chuck Berry. According to Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson stole from other artists. How many lead guitarists have tried to “emulate” Jimi Hendrix? In entertainment was there a big fuss when Bo Derek started wearing hair braids and making it popular (something the Black community had done for years before her)? ¬†How about when John Travolta started using dance moves in “Saturday Night Fever” that Blacks had been doing for “so many years” on Soul Train? Music is a learned trait. You don’t learn how to play without at least hearing how others have done it before you. Bruno Mars has taken Black music and continued to make it popular, while other artists have gravitated into this crazy style that not many people like. I am a big fan of Bruno Mars and I hope he doesn’t try to change his music just to appease those small amounts of people who want to make his music “political.” We ALL have to borrow from somebody or else we will never learn…. and never grow…. ¬†Instead of attacking him we all should be supporting him for keeping great music alive. Thank you for checking out my Daily Thought and as always I wish you the very best that life has to offer.
