Brett Jolly’s Daily Thought (“Remembering my conversation with Isaac Hayes”)

For those of you who remember, Isaac Hayes was one of those celebrities that rose, fell, and then rose and fell again. His voice was considered to be a truly sexy and he was well known as a songwriter, actor, producer and voice artist. He did a lot for Stax Records and was involved in a lot of their hits. He was also inducted into the Songwriters hall of fame in 2005. One of his most notable works that he co wrote was “Soul Man” by Sam and Dave. He also starred in movies such as “Truck Turner” and “I’m gonna get you sucker.” He also was the voice for the character “Chef” in the cartoon “South Park.” Isaac, who once made millions (and had gold plated Cadillacs with gold plated windshield wipers) had eventually went into bankruptcy. He had gone from being on top to losing just about everything. However, over the years he managed to recover (not many artists can claim that story after losing everything). For one of those award shows we actually did a musical tribute to Isaac. The tribute went great, and I could see Isaac in the audience bobbing his head to the music and enjoying what we were doing. After the show was over, Isaac came up to me and we talked. He mentioned that we did a great job, especially when it came to his hit song “Shaft.” I asked him about the off timing parts in the song. There were changes in the song that seemed to come out of nowhere, so I asked him why he wrote it that way. He said that he had to write the song for the movie and that the parts had to match whenever certain scenes changed (so in other words, the music had to change with the scenes). It was a pleasure to chat with him, and I was really excited when I heard that I was going to play for him in Wilmington, Delaware. However, we were about two weeks from reaching that goal when Isaac died. My wishes for actually performing with him were vanquished, and instead they got Freddie Jackson to replace his spot. If you get the chance, Google his name and take a look at all the great things he was involved in. Unfortunately, I was never able to get a picture with him. As for the weird changes in his hit song “Shaft,” just check them out in the video below. The amazing part about this video is that the song features a full orchestra, and yet on this video the only musicians I see are Isaac, a guitar player and drummer. Of course, Isaac is lip syncing because he doesn’t even have a microphone. Thank you for checking out my Daily Thought, and as always I wish you the very best that life has to offer.
