Brett Jolly’s Daily Thought (Topic: Christie and Obama)

Sometimes even some of the most “disastrous” events can produce some form of silver lining. Over the past couple of days the hurricane that devastated most of the East Coast took lives, property and livelihoods from normal citizens. Hurricane Sandy” ran into Atlantic City, New Jersey and turned the place where I have performed many times into something almost “unrecognizable.” While many people were lucky to survive, areas such as AC and New York were pummeled by the mighty wrath of the storm. I don’t need to tell you about the things that you have already read about.  Today’s article is about something much different. For those of you who did not notice, President Obama visited the Jersey area and actually worked hand in hand with New Jersey governor Christie in attempting to aid the victims. While this shouldn’t sound like such a rarity, you need to consider “this:” Obama is a Democrat and Christie is a Republican… For both of them to share the same stage and the same concern just overwhelmed me, because in the last few years it has been so difficult to find both sides agreeing or sharing in “anything.” During President Obama’s term, I often felt as though if he introduced a bill that said “Water is wet” then the Republicans would have overwhelmingly voted against it. It often felt as though “both” sides were more interested in supporting their own parties than the needs of the people they are supposed to serve. Seeing both of these gentlemen together and united for a common goal warmed my heart, because when that happens then we, the people benefit from it… I hope this image gets played over and over in the media, because it shows that under the right circumstances we just “might” be able to govern by non-partisan policies one day. To me it is just a shame that it took destruction of this magnitude for it to happen. To me a leader is only as good as his or her ability to “listen” to those who are being led. If you ignore the needs of your people to tend to the needs of your “party” then who are you really representing? Today’s topic is “not” about election choices, but rather elected “results.” If you are voted into office then please be prepared to go against your own party for the greater good of the population if necessary. This applies to both sides. Some people will only vote Republican or Democrat. While it is admirable to support your party it is more admirable to support the platform that is best suited for you and those around you. Don’t be afraid to stand alone. Of course, this union of the President and Governor Christie will still have those who will not be swayed, but that’s okay. This is not about altering “your vote.” This is about working together when we need to. That makes a difference and that, in my view, is the “silver lining” that should give us all hope. Here is the Phantom Poet to take this up a notch:

When it came to the destruction, the devastation and the trauma
It was great to see the union of Governor Christie and Obama
Sandy was a very rough hurricane that dispensed some horrifying weather
But after it was all said and done, it was great to see these two work together
They complimented each other, and in the end they both stood tall
It led me to believe that one day we CAN stand united after all
The election is only a few days away, and while both parties need time to devote
Its inspiring to know that they can take time to focus on other things besides your vote
They recognized that help is needed and they are working to do what’s necessary
I just hope that this type of union won’t be something that’s only “temporary
Tragedies can happen from time to time, and often victims need a hand out
After all, isn’t that what life is “supposed” to be about?
We may never see another union like this ever again
But I hope that we all can learn something from these two men
So I would like to thank Christie and Obama from providing us with a different “scope
It lets me know that maybe one day we can see with one vision, and maybe then have “hope”
